Cable Transportation
Cable transportation is a mode of transportation that uses a cable as the main means to move the vehicle or people. Forms range from aerial lifts, surface lifts to vertical lifts. The aerial tramway is a lift which involves two stationary cables and a third one that provides the propulsion. Surface lift on the other hand transports snowboarders uphill while they are still on the ground.Another more common example of cable transportation is the vertical lift. A good example vertical lifts is the elevator with cables attached from the top to guide its upward and downward movement. Cables are sold all over the world, some are very poor. But at Nassau electrical we only release quality products into the market. Our manufacturers are distinguish and all their products have a level of quality touch.
The use of transit cables are common in marine areas where the cables have to support the upward and downward movement of the vehicle.
Transit Cable
Transit cable design is tailored for use in harsh environments where it is continuously exposed to water, wear and tear. Therefore, high levels of reliability are expected together with strength and durability. Its construction is thus highly configured to meet these specific requirements together with the ability to withstand operation in high temperatures. Strength is especially a parameter of great consideration bearing in mind the safety required in cable transportation. The cable is also engineered to survive corrosive marine elements while in use.
Types of transit cable
There are several types of transit cables each configured differently to meet specific industry applications. Here are a few examples;
Category 5E quad shielded cable
This type of cable is used for applications in marine environments. The conductivity of the conductor is enhanced by application of a coat of tin while plating is done to minimize oxidation and avoid cable wear. Apart from marine applications, the cable is also applied in high speed data transmission.
Polyrad ultra Wire
With double insulation, available in multiple colors as well as more than one conductor configurations, this cable is suited for high density cabling. Moreover, the Polyrad Ultra cable has a smaller diameter, reduced weight and a higher temperature rating.
Transpower Head-End Power Cable
This is a single-conductor or three-conductors cable with a thermoplastic elastomer for insulation and a strengthened neoprene jacket used for heavy applications that are characterized by high levels of flexing. Its high flexibility helps in effective vibration damping and offers a favorable bend radius as well.
Electronically controlled pneumatic cable
This is a cable engineered for use in freight cars applied below or in between the freight vehicles. Insulation used here is Polyolefin which is cross-linked to enhance its properties to offer flame resistance and prevent corrosion.
Construction
Transit cables come as a single conductor, two conductors or even in the configuration of three conductors. More to that there are options for armored or unarmored types. The conductor used in transit cable is annealed copper class B strand. It could be used bare or in several plated forms including tin plated, silver plated and nickel plated types.
Insulation
The common insulation used on the transit cable is ETFE because of its proven resistance to the effect of corrosive chemicals and substances. Unlike other materials like rubber and plastic, ETFE does not undergo speedy deterioration when exposed to the chemicals. In addition to that, ETFE offers top mechanical strength, superb stiffness and resistance to physical scratches. In the case of high temperatures, this kind of insulation offers over forty years’ worth of service.
Based on where the transit cable is applied and the need for high levels of reliability, its insulation mechanism is improved through radiation processing. Radiation processing provides a way to crosslink the insulation and outer jacket through the application of an electron beam. The result is the cable works more stably in environments with high temperatures while offering even more flexibility.
Applications
Transit cables as the name suggests find huge application in ca ble transit industry providing support and propulsion for freight cars and cable cars. Another use of these cables is in offshore power generation in the areas of entry sealing and providing vibration damping.
