SOOW cable is versatile portable electrical cords

SOOW cable is one of the most popular and versatile portable electrical cords made today. These are multi-conductor cords, comprised of 2 or more conductors, which can be used in both indoor and outdoor applications. This wide variety of SO applications enables it to be used in a variety of environments. It can be used in commercial, industrial, and residential applications and even mines marinas and farms. SO Is known best for its excessively high stranding which allows extreme flexibility and makes it perfect for portable appliances and motors.

Below is the Key SOOW is manufactured for:

S = Service Cord (600 Volts)

J = Junior Service Cord (300 Volts)

T = Thermoplastic

E = Elastomer

O = Oil Resistant Outside Jacket

OO = Oil Resistant both inside insulation and outside jacket

W = CSA designation for weather/water resistance

There has always been a lot of confusion between both SOOW and SJOOW cables. What is the difference? There is ONLY one difference and thats that its 600 Volt is SOOW and SJOOW is 300 Volt. The "J" in the SJOOW stands for junior and necessitates 300 volt. There is no difference between the rubber flexibility or stranding based on the gauge ie 12/3 SJOOW vs 12/3 SOOW has same stranding just the jacket is a little thinner because of the lower voltage rating with the SJOOW. Both SOOW and SJOOW have resistance to the following: oil which is what the first "O" in stands for. SOOW is just a large an acronym referring to difference resistance particles. The second "O" stands for oil resistance as well just on the outer jacket wheras the first O is resistant to the inner jacket. The "W" stands for water resistance and the "S" stands for service. The SOOW cable can be used in heavy duty oil applications but people are starting to move towards type W where a higher voltage is needed, it just depends on the applications. The SOOW is the ideal cable where portable machinery and equipment are used and especially for audio applications where durability and portability are immenint. Marines and docks and mines all use SOOW as well. Marines use it to connect the cable to their slips or on the boats themselves for electrical connections and support. The mines use the power cable usually for the lighting as they burrow through.
