Guy and Messenger cables are constructed using three or seven concentric-lay-stranded conductors with equal diameters. Each strand is bare, hard-drawn steel covered with a thick pure aluminum coating in a continuous ductile weld that provides a strong bond to the core. The steel core of each strand imparts high strength to the cable, and the aluminum cladding has excellent corrosion protection that prevents the steel from rusting and ensures it maintains its strength for a longer lifespan. Aluminum's corrosion resistance is superior to galvanized steel and thus requires less maintenance. Aluminum is also an excellent conductor, and an aluminum-clad steel strand has superior conductivity to galvanized steel. The cable weighs less than other types of high-strength guy and messenger wire because aluminum is much lighter; this helps for an easier installation.
Aluminum-clad Guy and Messenger wires can withstand harsh weather conditions such as icing and high speed winds, and are resistant to physical damage such as that from falling tree branches and trees. The cables have excellent thermal stability, allowing them to operate at high temperatures over long periods of time without fail. Generally used for stability and support, these cost-effective cables are found in wind turbines, power and telephone lines, railway and subway systems, radio towers, and masts.

- High conductivity due to aluminum cladding.
- High strength-to-weight ratio for excellent support and protection.
- Superior corrosion resistance for long-lasting protection in harsh weather conditions.
Technical Standards
A-474 Round, aluminum-clad steel wires with uniform tension stranding used as messenger, guy, span wires or equivalent; of strand grades Siemens-Martin, common, utilities, high-strength, and extra high-strength.
B-415 Bare, round, hard-drawn, steel wire covered with an aluminum coating in sizes 4 to 12 AWG, with four conductivities. Used for electrical purposes.
B-416 Bare concentric-lay-stranded conductors constructed using bare, round, hard-drawn, aluminum covered steel wires that have 20.3% conductivity and are used for electrical purposes.
