URD Cable / Wire
The underground residential distribution (URD) wire has a conductor made up of strands of compressed aluminum alloy 1350 series. It is insulated using cross-lined polyethylene (XLPE) that is black in color. Its phase conductors and assembled together with neutral conductors forming a twisted cord. This cord is mostly used in underground electrical wiring systems. You will often find being used in light and medium duty commercial applications. It is also commonly used to supply power in underground residential areas. The cable has a voltage rating of 600v.
The URD cable meets the standards set by the Underwriters Laboratories as well as the Insulated Cable Engineers Association (ICEA). The wire is often either installed in ducts or buried. It can be used in environments prone to water and moisture. It also performs well in dry areas. Because of its high resistance to scratching and abrasion, the wire is used in work locations where abrasion is a common occurrence.
The URD wire is made up of strands of aluminum conductor compressed 1350-H19. It is insulated using cross-linked polyethylene. The conductors are insulated and then surface printed making it easy to identify them.
What Is URD Wire?
URD wire is a specific type of building wire intended for underground, residential use.
What Does URD Mean?
URD wire stands for “Underground Residential Distribution wire”.
How Is URD Wire Applied?
URD wire is most often used as directly buried or installed in ducts for 600 volt secondary distribution.

What Are Some URD Wire Specifications?
URD wire has a construction of a concentric stranded or compressed 1350-H19 aluminum conductor, with cross-linked polyethylene insulation. Insulated conductors are surface printed, neutral triple yellow striped. Black neutrals may be specified if desired.
There are several variants of the URD wire. These include;
Quadruplex Aluminum URD Cable
To make this wire, 3-phase conductors are assembled together with one neutral conductor. This cable can withstand temperatures of up to 90°C.
Triplex Aluminum URD Cable
This wire’s conductors are made using an aluminum alloy that has 99.5% aluminum and 0.5% silicon, copper, zinc and other such elements. These added elements make the alloy stronger.
Duplex Aluminum URD Cable
This wire is used in underground applications, especially those that use ducts and conduits. It is protected by polyethylene making it an ideal wire for many underground residential wiring. This polyethylene coat makes it possible for the wire to operate in environments whose temperatures can rise as high as 75°C.
URD Wire – Single Conductor Aluminum Cable
This wire is designed to be used in the wiring system of residential areas. These include detached & semi detached houses, row housing and town housing.
