AWAC
Applications:
AWAC is a versatile conductor that can be used for many different purposes. The cable is most commonly used as a phase conductor to increase covered distance or clearance. This cable is also used to protect power lines. The cable absorbs lightning strikes and absorbs lightening induced voltage surges that would otherwise critically damage the power lines. This product is employed heavily in railway, subway, and trolley systems as span-wire, holding the train’s main power line in position above the track. It is common to see this cable used as guy wire, providing structural support to tall, narrow structures such as ship masts, radio towers, or windmills. The intertwined 1350-H19 aluminum and aluminum-clad steel wires allow AWAC to function as both a conductor or support wire.
Specifications:
In accordance with standards set forth by the American Society for Testing and Materials:
- Concentric-lay-stranded 1350-H19 aluminum round wires and aluminum-clad steel wires for use in overhead transmission.
- Aluminum components of this product used for this purpose are classified as B549 aluminum.
- For electrical purposes, aluminum 1350-H19 hard, round wire is classified as B230 aluminum.
- The steel core meets or exceeds ASTM B502 standards.
Construction Options:
The construction of this product can vary depending on the necessary usage needed. Typically, the cable is constructed of concentric-lay-stranded 1350-H19 aluminum round wires around an aluminum-clad steel core. However, for scenarios when strength is needed, AWAC can be constructed of intertwined, concentrically wrapped 1350-H19 aluminum round wires with aluminum-clad steel wires.
