Description:
The Triplex Aluminum Service Drop Cable is a common overhead wire that transmits power from an electric pole to the customer’s building. Overhead cables generally have triplex or quadraplex conductors. Triplex is to say that it comes with three conductors that are individually twisted around each other. Of these, two are hot legs of the service wire. The other one is an insulated wire or bare wire called a neutral cable.
Concentrically stranded aluminum alloy is used to construct the two hot conductors. The 6201-T81 which is an aluminum clad steel is used to construct the bare conductor. Major composition of the neutral is aluminum at 99.5% with the other composition comprising of zinc and copper. These other metals improve the conductivity and strength of the bare copper.
The Triplex cable has its conductors twisted together to improve performance. The concentric stranded aluminum conductors are stranded and compressed to cut down the diameter of the cable. The phase conductors have higher gauge size as compared to the neutral cable.
Application:
The Triplex aluminum service drop cable is used in areas with 75°C or 90°C with polyethylene or XLPE insulation. It provides service at 600 volts from the utility lines to the customer’s weather head.
Features:
• Maximum voltage rating is 600 volts
• Heat and sunlight resistant
• Maximum temperature rating of 90°C
• Lead free insulation
• Approved by industrial standards for wet and dry locations
Insulation:
The conductors are enclosed in cross-linked polyethylene insulation. This protects cable from weathering, tearing, cutting and abrasion.
Certifications:
The cable is constructed in line with the following standards;
• ANSI/ICEA S-76-474
• B-498 Zinc coated steel core wire for ACSR
• B-230 Aluminum Wire 1350-H19 for electrical purposes
• B-399 Concentric lay stranded 6201-T81 Aluminum alloy conductors
• B-231 Aluminum Conductors concentric lay stranded
• B-232 Aluminum Conductors concentric lay stranded ACSR

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Ask a Question-
Looking for a triplex type but I believe I need 4 insulated conductors and a ground 350 feet. I need a parallel run 350 feet. Overhead. Secondary service for a temp. Need ASAP. Laurel Maryland. Do I need an insulated neutral?
Triplex wires have already been incorporated with neutral wires. Overhead applications are prone to short circuits and electrical surges therefore a neutral wire is essential. They also need to be insulated for identification and safety reasons however it is not mandatory to insulate neutral wires in overhead cables. So we have many options which will work for you.
-
What is a service drop cable?
A service drop cable is a wire that connects the overhead pole to the consumer or residential building.
-
How many amps will a 1/0 triplex service drop cable allow?
The 1/0 triplex wire can transmit current of 200 amps
