ACSS Aluminum Conductor Steel Supported
Applications:
This conductor is used primarily in high heat scenarios and can transmit effectively at temperatures up to 250°C. ACSS is an overhead transmission and distribution cable that is preferred in more volatile areas such as reactors and power plants. Its ability to handle emergency electrical loadings make it preferable to ACSR in scenarios where power outages are more likely to occur and emergency backup power is needed. This is a useful trait because typically when emergency backup power is needed, it is difficult to evenly administer the voltage from the backup source. The inconsistent flow of electrical current tends to cause the overhead transmission lines to sag. This conductor shows significantly less sag under these circumstances due to its high strength steel core.
Specifications:
In accordance with specifications set forth by the American Society of Testing and Materials:
- The round wire component of this conductor consist of annealed and tempered B-609 aluminum 1350 for electrical purpose.
- Aluminum is heated and cooled to improve hardness and elasticity.
- Steel core is coated with aluminum and high-strength zinc-5% aluminum Misch Metal alloy.
Construction:
Conductors
- 1350-0 aluminum wires.
Reinforcement
- The steel core carries most of the workload and is coated by Galfan®, zinc-5% aluminum-Misch Metal alloy. Replacing the standard steel core with high strength steel, aluminized steel, or aluminum-clad steel can enhance the longevity of the cable’s core. All of these options are available.
