Aluminum clad steel wire / Aluminum Conductors are a concentric-lay-stranded cable made up of a combination of 1350-H19 aluminum and aluminum-clad steel wires. The aluminum is especially important for this wire to extend its useable life and decrease the amount of corrosion, especially because it is a bare wire. AWAC conductors have many different uses. The most common use for AWAC cable is as a phase conductor to increase the amount of distance or clearance covered in a run. One of the most important uses for AWAC cable is as a protector of other cables, specifically against lightning strikes against power lines. The AWAC cable will absorb the voltage surges that would have otherwise caused great damage to power lines.
There are also many other uses: AWAC cables are used for guy-wires or guy-lines. These are lines typically found on a structure, and are there to provide support. Common guy wire uses are to help support the mast on a ship, to hold up wind turbines, and utility poles. AWAC is also sometimes used as a shield wire, and may be wrapped around other more important wires, in order to protect them from the elements. AWAC can also be used as a static wire, overhead ground wires, messengers, span wires, etc.
Product Highlights
- Aluminum-clad steel wires offer increased corrosion resistance and higher conductivity versus standard galvanized steel wires.
- Many uses including protection against lightning strikes, guy-wire, shield wire, static wire, overhead grounds and span wires.
Technical Standards
B-230 Aluminum 1350-H19, extra hard, round wire for electrical purposes. The aluminum wire shall be made from drawing stock and shall be free of brittleness as evidenced by its ability to be coiled or looped around its own diameter with or without a mandrel.
B-502 round, aluminum-clad steel core wire used for mechanical reinforcement in the manufacture of aluminum conductors, aluminum-clad steel reinforced.
B-549 concentric-lay-stranded conductors made from round aluminum 1350-H19 (extra hard) aluminum wires and round aluminum-clad steel core wires for use as overhead electrical conductors.
